But, it’s impossible for me to stick to only three topics. I’ve got ants in my pants and bees in my bonnet. I’m hoping from idea to idea faster than honey bees after nectar.
I buzz around from one obsession to another. Attention Deficit whatever. My last post was . . . months ago . . . on The Art of Handwritten Notes. I was diligently writing handwritten notes and making origami for about three months. Then spring arrived and I got bit by a bug of a different color: the gardening bug.
Being the bookworm that I am, I’ve been devouring every book that I can find on gardening.
The first was on Raised Bed Gardening; (I built five raised beds so far). Next I stumbled upon Vertical Gardening. I set up at least three places to test this out with beans, sweet peas and morning glories. Last but not least, Mel Bartholomew’s Square Foot Gardening, which was like a revelation to me. It made me want to tear up my new raised beds and start all over.
But I had mercy on all my sentient little plants and left them alone, using this method on my last, deepest raised bed with a handmade vertical thingamabob at one end.
What’s next? I don’t know. But the bumblebee is already off and humming. Running.
I got interested in running a three years ago with Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen. Then I found the Couch-to-5K ® Running Plan & C25K Mobile App, which is basically, an interval training program to get newbies up to speed. So the newbie got up to speed.
Then in January 2012 I got hit, hard, with a mysterious intestinal bug. The only running I could do wast to the bathroom. For five months I got tested for every possible bug on the planet. Turns out that it wasn’t a bug, but Celiac Disease. The Rx for that is a strict gluten-free diet. More on that another time.
After eight months on the gluten-free diet, I wasn’t seeing any improvement. The Kaiser GI recommended trying a low FODMAP diet. Pow! Whammo! Zowie! That really helped. It was totally counter-intuitive since I had to cut out super-healthy food, like pears, apples, honey, beans (no more chili!) and a bunch of other stuff.
Now my guts are finally healing (Whew!) and my energy is coming back big time. That’s what got me off the sofa and into the yard with all that digging & planting. Now that the heavy lifting is over in the yard, I need something else to burn off all of this excess energy.
I went down to the bike path along the beach and started intervals again. This morning I clocked 4 miles in 1:09 (says my RunKeeper app).
Nobody reads my blog except spammers, so I’m going to ignore the rules and write about what I like. If somebody else likes it, that’s gravy (which I can’t eat anymore). So have fun reading my ramblings. If anything inspires you or puts a bee in your bonnet, let me know. Thanks.
